Our days are still starting early although Linda leads the way in getting up first. This morning it was 0315! There are early starts and then there are Coy early starts! Mind you, our stay at this Airbnb in Big Island is worth a whole post just on its own!
I did refer to the spectacular place we are staying in at the end of yesterday's post but something interesting happened during the night. We are actually based in an open space on the third floor of this house and are sharing the lounge and kitchen with two young Japanese men who had not returned from their day out when we hit our bed early last night. Well they returned home at 10pm, not late I acknowledge, but then right below our open loft bedroom started to consume beers, eat crisps and chat rather loudly and basically ignore the protocol of respect for other guests. As we laid in bed, by now wide awake, it felt like the two guys were having a party actually sitting on our bed!
We weren't very happy but neither was Rhonda our host and apparently, she gave them the hard word and things went quiet very quickly. We assumed that they had both retired to their bedroom. Not the case!
On making our first drink of the day, I delivered one to Linda who was actually reading her book in bed by this time and then returned downstairs to drink mine very quietly on the sofa whilst catching up with the news from home on my Ipad. Imagine my surprise when I was just about to sit down on the sofa and I discovered one of the young Japanese men lying there naked but for two towels!! Bloody hell! That was some surprise and I quickly scampered upstairs to my loft bedroom to hide. I think further words were had with the young men this morning by Rhonda and we will see what happens tonight.
It's been a terrific day after spending it discovering just how volcanic The Big Island really is! It's volcanic alright and we discovered that Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world. It was formed between 300,000 and 600,000 years ago and over the years has caused some death and destruction. It's name actually means "spewing" which refers to the lava it regularly throws out and it is interesting to note that with its sister volcano, Mauna Loa, they increased the size of the island by 543 acres in a 19 year period!
The landscape is fascinating and when you venture the 20 miles down Crater Rim Drive to the Pacific, you drive through vast swathes of lava which ultimately created cliffs as it fell into the sea and cooled. Standing on these cliffs, which carry a warning that they are a tad unstable, you are overwhelmed by what nature has produced here!
Again I am faced with writing little and letting the photos tell the story although these can never replicate seeing this place through your own eyes. I have found it totally mesmerising in the very short time that we have spent here to date.
